Traditional Swedish coffee maker made “Äggatårta” (=egg cake)

Aaaw, the “Äggatårta” (=egg cake) brings back so many beautiful memories. It’s a very traditional Swedish recipe and I don’t remember any christmas, midsummer, period party, wedding, easter or birthday without the Äggatårta. Since easter is just around the corner I will now show you how to cook an Äggatårta with your coffee maker. Do I need to tell you that the higher Äggatårta the better..?

If you don’t know how to serve your ugly eggs on your uninspiring easter table… Serve them like this.

Cooking with your coffee maker

Time

  • Depends on how high you want to make it. This one took 5 hours. Worth every second.

Ingredients

(for the Äggatårta in this post)

  • 11 eggs
  • Lots of mayonnaise
  • Lots of Kalles kaviar (oh, you’ll probably have to import that one, right?)
  • Pepper
  • Butter

Instructions

This Äggatårta is build by hard boiled and turned over eggs, glued with mayonnaise and then decorated with the Kalles kaviar.

Put six of the eggs in the coffee maker carafe and pour water into the coffee brewer. Start your coffee maker. The eggs have to be hard boiled so I coffee maker cooked them for almost 1½ hour (just to be super sure (well, I also might have forgot about them for a while…)). Pour off the warm water, dunk them in some cool water and shell them.

Melt butter directly on the heater. Crack an egg on it and fry it pretty hard on both sides. It takes about 30 minutes to make a turned over egg. The Äggatårta in the picture got four turned over eggs. Since it’s important that all of the turned over eggs are perfectly round and have the same size, the coffee maker heater is the perfect weapon of choice for this, even though it takes some time. Turn off the coffee maker when you’re done.

Construction time! Divide all the hard boiled eggs in half, except for one. Put a turned over egg on a plate. Place three egg halves onto the turned over egg. Glue them together with mayonnaise and season with pepper. Go on like that until you place the last turned over egg. Now you’ll have one whole egg, and one egg half left. Shred the whole egg and top nicely with the thin egg slices.And now decoration time – aka Kalles kaviar time! String a lot of caviar over the whole cake. Put the last egg half on top and decorate with even more Kalles. Yum!

Open faced easter sandwiches

Time

  • 2 hours

Ingredients

(approx. 6 sandwiches)
  • 12 eggs (6 eggs for decoration)
  • 1 dl mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp sour cream
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 carrot
  • Some ham
  • Horseradish
  • A dash of lemon juice
  • Caprice
  • 1 avocado
  • A couple of radishes
  • 1 tsp of Scanian mustard (or some other kind if you’re not from Skåne and have a scanian mustard addiction like I do)
  • Chives
  • Cayenne pepper
  • Pepper
  • Salt
  • Lettuce
  • Bread
  • Butter
  • Beetroot salad

Instructions

Place eggs in coffee maker can, water into the brewer and start your coffee maker. Cook until the eggs are very hard boiled – at least for a good hour. Meanwhile peel, grate, chop and slice all of the other ingredients. Drain water and put the eggs in cold water for a short while. Turn off coffee maker. Crack egg shells and carefully peel the eggs. Mix eggs with the other ingredients (except for salad, bread, butter and beetroot salad).

Butter a slice of bread, add egg/ham salad, place a couple of lettuce leaves and finish with the egg decor. I made a little egg baby bunny and a chick. The ears of the bunny is a sliced carrot, the nose a piece of radish, the eyes are caprices and chives for whiskers. For the chick I cut a jagged line around the top of the egg. Be sure just to cut the white part of the egg so that it will look like it’s hatching. For eyes I used red onion and the beak and feet are pieces of carrots.

How to cook Easter Lollipops with your coffee maker.

This didn’t turn out quite as I had imagined. In my mind it would be super sweet lollipops shaped like cute easter bunnies and perfectly formed eggs. I wanted my nails to match the colorful feather decorations, but the only thing that matches is the dirt I got under my nails and the egg lollipop that looks like dog shit.

But it tastes better than it looks (I actually think it’s a quite common and popular recipe). That is if you like the taste of pure sugar.

Time

  • 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 1 dollop of butter
  • 1 bag of marshmallows
  • 100 g dark chocolate
  • 1 bowl of Coco Pops
  • Stuff to decorate the lollipops with

Instructions

Start your coffee maker. Melt butter in the carafe and add marshmallows. This will melt quite quickly, after like 20 minutes. Add chopped chocolate, stir, and add coco pops into the mixture when everything has melted. Turn off the coffee maker.

Pour the batter onto a baking sheet and flatten it. When it cools a little it’s time for you to start trying to form it like bunnies and eggs. Press a stick in the bottom and decorate it as well as you are able to.

This my friend, is how you cook three different kinds of heart on your coffee maker and make a sexy salad out of it. A great dish to serve on Valentine’s day.

Time

2 hours

Ingredients

1/2 coffee maker plate of pig heart (1 plate is what fits on the coffee maker heater)
1/2 coffee maker plate of lamb heart
1/2 coffee maker plate of chicken hearts
Red chard
Pomegranate
Mozzarella
Parmesan
Walnuts
Balsamic vinegar
Olive oil
Salt
Pepper
Butter

Instructions

Start your coffee maker and heat the butter directly on the plate. Clear away the gory stuff from the hearts and cut into smaller pieces. Coffee maker fry a plate of lamb and pig heart (50 /50) throughly on each side. The time depends on the sizes of the pieces, for me it took approximately 45 minutes. Twist and turn so the hearts wont get burned. Season with love (salt and pepper) .

Replace the lamb and the pig hearts to all the chickens’ hearts you have prepared. Coffee maker cook them exactly the same as the others. Turn of your coffee maker.

Mix the salad with shared mozzarella and pomegranate. Place the hearts on the bed of fresh salad. Top with grated parmesan and crushed walnuts. Drizzle balsamic vinegar and serve.

Cinnamon bun day!

Every year on October 4th we Swedes celebrate Cinnamon Bun Day. As you will see, in this special cinnamon bun post, I have baked many different types these last couple of years. 

Time

That depends on the device you use and if you bake from scratch. But at least a couple of hours.

Ingredients

  • 1 package of instant dough. Or google another recipe if you’d like to bake from scratch.
  • Lots of butter
  • Lots of sugar
  • Lots of cinnamon
  • Pearl sugar

Instructions

The preparations for all of the different sorts are the same. Just read the instant dough package when preparing the dough.

I prefer to buy those packages of instant dough because I think it’s boring to make a dough from scratch and it takes forever.

Shape it like a small pizza in size of the coffee maker heater. Place it onto the buttered coffee maker heater.

2. The praline sized model.

Shape the like a small sized cinnamon bun. Place them onto the buttered coffee maker heater.

Shape the like a normal sized cinnamon bun. Place them onto the buttered coffee maker heater.

ROSKILDE FESTIVAL

YAAAAY! On sunday Roskilde Festival opens. I can’t wait! We’re driving down south to Lund and Malmö tomorrow and will leave the cats with Dan’s brother and his family. And I’m going to spend some time with my niece, Thilde. This is Thilde.

Since my brother and his wife are going to a wedding it’s finally all clear for me and Thilde to cook with their beautiful Mocca Master! (To my brother: NO, I’M JUST KIDDING!!! I KNOW I’M NOT ALLOWED TO COOK WITH YOUR FREKKIN MOCCA MASTER! Chill.)

Anyway… On sunday we’re going to Roskilde and have an amazing week with lots of great music, friends, weirdness and food of course. This is how you cook my favorite festival food with a coffee maker. Canned ravioli! Since I can’t bring my coffee maker to Roskilde I will probably eat this cold every day (too lazy to heat it on the camping area).

FESTIVAL FOOD – CANNED RAVIOLI

  • ≥ 0 sec

Ingredients

  • 1 can of ravioli

Instructions

Start your coffee maker and add the ravioli into the carafe. Heat as long as you cope and serve the food directly from the can. Turn off the coffee maker.

Canned pea-soup is also great festival food, and then there’s Dan’s favorite – white beans. Too bad that Dan is sooo picky and always want to heat the food before eating. Yawn.

Roskilde

Serve the cold ravioli with lukewarm 19 dkk wine from Netto. And look at that little armpit vagina! Sweet.

Happy midsummer!

Haha, I never get tired of this. Last week we went to our cabin again and some friends joined us. I’ve already told you about Zappa and his sock hat and this time it was the same procedure again when we entered the smaller road. He’s like “OPEN THE FREKKIN WINDOW NOOOOOW, HUMAN!” and tries to smash it with his wrinkly head if I won’t open right away.

First I showed our friends in the back seat what it’s like for him without the sock hat. They immediately understood the problem. Then I put the sock hat on and they were amazed and probably thought I’m the smartest crazy cat woman in the world.

Soon (in two hours) we’re off to the cabin again! We’re going to celebrate midsummer – THE best holiday in my opinion. That and crayfish parties. Or all parties really as long as you get to sing schnaps songs and wear hats. But I especially like the Midsummer hats that are made of flowers, leaves and stuff. Even made one to Gucci last year.Swedish midsummerI always forget that this is supposed to be a blog about food and not about cats. Maybe I should post a midsummer recipe as well. Yup, I’ll do that. You know? The most popular dish we Swedes eat on midsummer (well on every holiday, because we eat the same stuff on all holidays) is the soused herring. Hell, that’s disgusting. I remember last midsummer when our guests arrived and brought lots of this shit and I almost puked in front of them by the thought of it. Now that’s a proper welcome, right? I don’t like herring at all any longer and I’ve told you the story before and you can read about it here (beware of disgusting stuff, like puke- and diarrhea disgusting).

If you should try herring, try this type. This I actually loved (but if you read the story you know why I don’t any longer).

Pickled herring with onion

Time

  • 1 hour + preparations and cooling

Ingredients

  • 1 tin of herring fillets
  • 0.5 dl vinegar
  • 2.5 dl water
  • 2 tsp pimento
  • 2 bay leaves
  • ½ dl sugar
  • 1 onion
  • 1 red onion
  • ½ leek

Instructions

Open the tin and drain the disgusting liquid stuff. Rinse the fillets and put it in a coffee carafe filled with water overnight.

Divide the herring into small pieces the following day and chop up all of the different onions.

Place everything except the herring (and the water) in the coffee carafe and pour the water into the brewer. Start the coffee maker. Let it coffee maker cook for about 30 minutes and then let it cool. Turn off the coffeemaker. Add the herring and pour everything into a fancy jar. It’s an old Swedish tradition as well that you should decorate the jar with some kind of balloon animal.

Serve.
